With the Democratic tsunami delivering state houses to Democrats across the country, we now have enough states to pass the National Vote Compact, which would automatically assign that state's electoral college votes to the popular vote winner.
This would restore integrity to our democracy in a huge way. Democratic candidates have won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote in two of the past seven presidential elections, and if we're really to be a democracy, the people should decide who gets to be president – not a cabal of unelected "electors."
The Electoral College was created specifically to ensure that slave-owning conservatives would wield outsized influence over our elections. It's racist, archaic, and wholly incompatible with modernity — not unlike A LOT of the people still supporting it. It's time to put that ugly history behind us and end the Electoral College for good.
