Lift Breed-specific Dog Bans and Implement a Dangerous Dog Law

Winnipeg has had a ban on Pit Bull breeds since 1990, but this ban has done little but hurt good dogs and owners. There are still fatal and serious dog attacks involving breeds that are not banned. The issue therefore is not with breeds, but with specific problem dogs and owners.

This problem has been dealt with efficiently by regions that implement a Dangerous Dog Law, as opposed to breed-specific bans. A law like this targets dogs known to be problematic, and holds owners responisble for their animals regardless of breed. In light of recent dog attacks in the news, this law would help protect adults and children better than the breed-specific laws currently in place, as the attacks were perpetrated by legal breeds.

Call on Winnipeg City Council to better protect our citizens, both two- and four-legged, by lifting the ineffective Pit Bull bans, and implementing a Dangerous Dog Law.
