On January 29th, neo-Nazis in Orlando, Florida held a disgusting rally during which they waved swastika flags and screamed anti-Semitic slurs at passing traffic. Widespread condemnation immediately erupted from members of both parties across the state — but not from the governor's office.
A spokeswoman for Governor Ron DeSantis sparked controversy by tweeting out "Do we even know they're Nazis?" while the governor himself dismissed the neo-Nazis as "jackasses" who were "doing some stuff" and said they'd be held accountable but failed to make a full-throated condemnation.
To add insult to injury, he took a page out of the Trump playbook and instead blamed Democrats for trying to "smear me as if I had something to do with it."
It's obvious that he's trying to avoid publicly condemning the neo-Nazis because he trafficks in the same vile brand of transparent white supremacy that Trump does — and he doesn't want to alienate any of their voters.
