End the Mass Cutting of Christmas Trees for Seasonal Waste

Petition to End the Wasteful Cutting and Disposal of Christmas Trees

Every year, millions of real Christmas trees are cut down, sold for a few weeks of decoration, and then discarded as waste. This practice has become normalized in countries such as United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, and many others around the world.
Trees that take 7–12 years to grow are treated as disposable objects, often ending up in landfills, burned, or dumped on streets and sidewalks once the holiday season ends. This is not only environmentally irresponsible, but ethically troubling.

Why This Must Stop

  • Millions of trees are cut down annually for temporary decoration
  • Discarded trees contribute to waste, emissions and urban pollution.
  • Wildlife habitats are disrupted for short-term consumer habits.
  • Many people buy trees with no plan for reuse, replanting, or recycling
  • This practice contradicts global efforts toward sustainability and climate responsibility
  • A living tree should not be treated as a seasonal product with an expiration date.

What We Are Asking For

We, the undersigned, call on governments, retailers, and citizens to take the following actions:

  • Reduce the mass sale of cut Christmas trees
  • Promote alternatives, such as:
  • Living potted trees that can be replanted
  • Tree rental programs
  • Artificial trees reused for many years
  • Educate the public on the environmental cost of discarded trees
  • Encourage cultural change away from wasteful holiday traditions
  • A Call for Respect Toward Nature

Celebration should not come at the cost of unnecessary destruction. Traditions can evolve. Joy does not require waste. Trees are living beings, not decorations to be thrown away when the season ends.
We urge individuals and nations alike to choose respect, responsibility and sustainability over convenience.

Sign This Petition If You Believe:
Trees are living beings, not seasonal decorations to be used for a few weeks and discarded. If environmental responsibility means anything, it must extend to our traditions and challenge wasteful practices that have been normalized. It is time to stop treating Christmas trees as disposable objects and start aligning celebration with sustainability.
