Dog Theft has risen at an alarming rate here in the UK-recent articles have brought to light the awful truth and shocking numbers.
The organisation that keeps the country's database of missing and stolen dogs, recieved about 3,500 reports of dog theft last year, but actual thefts are being estimated as far higher than those recorded by police. Experts say there is a 20% rise and more pets are being stolen for cruel Fighting/Baiting and to be exported and sold overseas.Dogs have been stolen from kennels, outhouses, even, when out walking with their owners and more targeted in burglaries by organised gangs.
Sadly, the lack of convictions for dog theft has encouraged thieves to view this crime as easy money and low risk.
Unlike any material object we know dogs feel Fear, Loss, Pain and Separation they are sentient beings and for many owners losing a dog is like losing a member of the family they are companion animals and there is a strong emotional bond.
In today's law Dogs are classed as 'Property(Chattel)' which is considered no more valuable than a TV or Phone, therefore dog thefts are often treated as a low priority by police.
This category must be changed to 'Living Creatures' to ensure a higher priority with police, and then tougher sentences can be given, to reflect the cruel nature of this crime.
