The government should provide incentives for students to travel overseas to teach English because foreign countries are desparate to pay high salaries to people with no qualifications simply because they are native English speakers. The teaching salary will repay the loan.

Why?

1)      Unemployment in Australia: English teaching jobs are easy to find overseas and lucrative

2)      Lack of education about foreign countries: Australians lack the experience.

3)      Ingratitude for Australia: Australians lack perspective.

4)      Australia’s relationship with foreign countries: Australia can HELP foreign countries by doing this. It's normal for teaching positions to remain vacant and schools are FORCED to work without a native English speaker because AUSTRALIANS ARE MISSING THE OPPORTUNITY.

Travel should be part of the Australian education system.  It should not be any different from mandatory studies in subjects such as History and Social Science. Government incentives provide a win-win for the people of many foreign countries and for the people of Australia.

The Australian government should make incentives for Australians to teach English overseas. This petition will give reasons for this and then suggest ways that it could be done. The reasons are:

Problem 1) could be solved because it is very easy to find a job in foreign countries as an English teacher. Most if not all of these countries do not require any experience or education and pay money above qualified teachers’ salary in those countries. This would provide Australians with an opportunity to make money and find a temporary job and come home with more money. This could provide a route for government spending on this venture to be repaid by Australians with the money they make working overseas.

Problem 2) could be solved by giving Australians the experience of foreign countries. Seeing foreign countries on TV and in the media is not the same as experience. This fact is so extremely true that only people who have travelled actually appreciate that it is true and someone who has not travelled will often not comprehend how valuable the experience can be. Many Australians are deeply enlightened by travel. This can some problem 3) because travel often causes people to stop complaining about Australia’s problems because they learn by experience that Australia is actually doing very well compared to other countries. It could also give Australians the opportunity to see foreign cultures and broaden their horizons. This would also apply to problem 4), where experience of how extremely different countries can be to one another would improve Australians’ relationship with recent immigrants.

Problem 4) could be solved because if Australia proactively provides English teachers to foreign countries and makes the entire process cheaper or easier for them, it can improve foreign relations. In many countries, schools are currently willing to take on anyone whose native language is English, are willing to take on board an employee at any time, yet don’t have access to one so simply go without. This is causing holes in foreign countries’ education system where they have the money to give to native English speakers and need to educate their children, but don’t. Helping these countries would be a win-win for Australia.

Problem 3) is that many people are quite vocal and bitter about problems in Australia. However, in many other countries, these problems are not even recognized as problems at all. These problems are often embraced 100% or not taken seriously by anyone at all. This is not to say that Australia should not continue to work to solve its’ problems, but allows Australians to have a more educated perspective about the world in order to understand these problems properly.

There are 2 ways the government could do this, although there may be others.

Firstly, the government could provide a free plane ticket to these countries and ask for it to be paid back with the money they make English teaching. This could be a very simple agreement where Australians simply needs to provide proof that they are travelling and enter an agreement to work in a foreign country as an English teacher, and that they must pay back the money for the plane ticket. This would obviously be very attractive to Australians as it basically means they get incentive to go on a holiday, since English teaching is often very fun and a way that people fund extended travelling for enjoyment.

Secondly, the government could enter more comprehensive agreements with individual countries. This could involve organising employees for government schools. It could involve agreements where schools can get access to Australian employees by dealing with Australian government agencies or enters agreements to provide employees. They could provide employees at a cheaper rate and not have to go through the trouble of finding employees and going through screening processes and interviews, since the government could do this for them.
