Bring GMO Labeling & "Prop 37" to KS!

We the people of Kansas believe with precedent that as consumers we have a right to know what we are eating, and this includes the right to know whether our food contains GM organisms. Just as we have the right to know whether or not our cookies and other food items contain trans fatty acids, we have a right to know whether our corn contains spliced genes releasing the BT toxin or other artificially spliced genes.

We are writing to urge the Kansas senate to introduce legislation for  the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. We have a right to know about the foods we eat and what we are feeding our children.

In America, we pride ourselves on having choices and making informed decisions. Under current FDA regulations, we don't have that choice when it comes to GMO ingredients in the foods we purchase and feed our families. Labeling is essential for consumer knowledge and decision making.

Genetically engineered foods are required to be labeled in the 15 European Union nations, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries around the world. As Americans and Kansans, we firmly believe we also have the right to know if our foods have been genetically engineered.

A recent poll released by ABC News found that 93 percent of the American public wants the federal government to require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. As ABC News stated, "Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare."

Thank you for supporting the labeling of GMO foods and for standing with the people of America and the state of Kansas!!

California's Proposition 37 (full text available at http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Text_of_California_Proposition_37_(November_2012) provides a decent template for similar legislature to be introduced into the great state of Kansas.

Thank you for supporting the labeling of GMO foods and for standing with the people of America and the state of Kansas!!
