She Stopped the Bus So a Child Could Save a Kitten. They Fired Her.

For 11 years, a woman drove children to school in rural Harford County, Maryland. Then she was taken off her route after she let a student step off the bus to pick up a tiny, injured kitten on a quiet country road. Parents say she is the most caring driver their children have ever had. Every school year, she buys supplies for every child on her bus, and she gives them gifts and birthday cards, all out of her own pocket. Video of the stop shows a rural road with almost no traffic, which parents say is the reason she made the choice she did.

Sign the petition urging Harford County Public Schools to restore her certification, return her to her route, and recognize her with a commendation for her years of service.

Even her supporters agree that letting a child off the bus was a mistake, and they say she knows it too. Student safety matters, and the rules exist for good reason. But losing a career of 11 years is far out of proportion to what happened. A warning, extra training, or clearer rules would have protected students without punishing a driver who has spent more than a decade looking out for them. The district has said certification decisions weigh many circumstances, yet it has declined to explain what led to this one.

The children on her bus watched a grown-up stop for a hurt animal that needed help. That lesson in compassion deserves to be encouraged, and the safety lesson can be taught without taking away the driver they trust.

Eleven years of kindness should not end over one moment of compassion on a quiet country road.

Sign the petition and tell Harford County Public Schools to bring this woman back!
