Honour Canada's Indigenous Peoples Next Victoria Day

  • da: Hanna Thomas

A group of Canadian actors, writers and politicians are calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to change the name of Victoria Day. The group — which includes author Margaret Atwood, Green Party leader Elizabeth May, and actor Gordon Pinsent — are asking him to rename the public holiday “Victoria and First Peoples Day."

Victoria Day marks the birthday of Queen Victoria and is celebrated every year on the last Monday before May 25. There is already a day to honour Canada's indigenous peoples, but it is not recognized as a federal public holiday.

The new name will give Canadians a chance to honour both the Crown and the indigenous peoples of Canada. By highlighting native history, the name will help put a spotlight on issues that have plagued aboriginal communities, such as discrimination, land treaty disputes, unemployment and poverty. Sign this petition to support the change and give Canada's First Peoples their long overdue recognition!

Dear Prime Minister Harper:

We, the undersigned, proudly and respectfully suggest that Canada’s Victoria Day Holiday be renamed VICTORIA and FIRST PEOPLES DAYBy doing so, all in Canada would have the opportunity to celebrate our continuing relationship with the Crown and with the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

For centuries, Canadians, the First Nations, the Inuit, and the Metis have had a close affinity with the British Monarchy. Partners in trade, allies in war, friends in peace, and often relatives through marriage and descent – it is from this ancient and honourable relationship that Canada was created.

The newly named holiday would be an opportunity to commemorate that venerable relationship, to celebrate unique Indigenous cultures, to revisit our shared history, and to provide an opportunity for all Canadians to participate in the diverse and extraordinary heritage of our country.

We hope that you and the Parliament of Canada will agree with this proposal.
