Fireworks Terrify Pets, Sometimes Leading to Death. The UK Must Pass Its Partial Fireworks Ban.

We already know that fireworks are bad for animals. The loud, battle-reminiscent sounds from the explosives trigger extreme fear and stress in pets, wildlife, and farm animals, who have no idea what is going on or if they're in harm's way. Every year, animals end up wounded and sometimes dead, both from fright and from accidents when they flee the noises. One known victim includes a baby red panda who died at an Edinburgh zoo.

For these - and other reasons - countries around the world have begun restricting public use of these explosives. Now the UK is finally considering joining their ranks, with a partial ban that would halve the decibel (sound) level and limit which types of fireworks consumers can buy.

The timing couldn't be more significant. On 5 November, Britons will celebrate Bonfire Night, and in less than two months, it will be New Year's Eve. Both occasions are often filled with public use of fireworks, including in backyards and on sidewalks, right next to where children are sleeping and pets are cowering in confusion and fear.

The president of the British Veterinary Association, Dr. Gwen Rees, clarified how harmful fireworks are for animals, saying fireworks can even lead to lasting anxiety that lingers long after the holiday in question is over.

And it's not only animals who suffer. It's people, too - whether that's from frightening children, to triggering panic attacks in people with (C)PTSD, or even from injuries incurred while lighting the explosives. Fireworks have also been increasingly associated with fires, both within cities, and in farmlands.

That's why other countries are also taking action. In the Netherlands, the Dutch government has banned most fireworks from general sale. In Switzerland, citizens are preparing to vote on a fireworks ban in late November 2026. Germany limits the time period during which people can buy and use fireworks. New Zealand laws regulate the maximum decibels (loudness) of fireworks. And Czechia has also strengthened its regulations.

It's time for the UK government to put animals, health, and safety first. Lawmakers must pass the partial fireworks ban that is currently under consideration!
