Urge the Government to Enact Tighter Animal Welfare Regulations to Prevent Live Export Cruelty

A steer in Australia that was being loaded into a ship to be live exported fell eight metres into Darwin Harbour, according to a report on 9news.com.au

The steer fell off the dock as it was distressed and almost drowned but was eventually retrieved from the harbour.

According to the report the steer was visibly confused and so upset during the loading process that council rangers were called by a local vet to sedate it.

However, the steer had not been adequately contained and it ran to the side of the dock and fell into the harbour.

Instead of being sent for vet care after being retrieved from the water the steer was loaded and exported to be slaughtered. A formal legal complaint has been made about the treatment the steer received.

All animals deserve to be treated humanely – including animals that are being exported.

Ideally, live export should be banned but until then will you join me in urging for tighter animal welfare regulations to prevent such cruelty happening again? Measures could include stricter controls on loading procedures to ensure animals are not distressed and set guidelines on banning sick and distressed animals from being loaded.
