I Support the Beans and Bread Renovation Project

Beans & Bread has been providing much-needed services to our more vulnerable neighbors in Southeast Baltimore, especially those experiencing homelessness, for over 33 years. Beans and Bread are now proposing a renovation project for their facility. Unfortunately, they are facing some strong opposition in the community. While we do respect the concerns of Beans and Breads' neighbors, we feel very strongly that this project should be allowed to proceed. Here are some of the reasons why....
The goal of the project is to better serve existing clientele in a more comprehensive and effective manner by:
- Bringing more clients in off the streets through the expansion of the intake and day respite area capacity from 30 people to 80
- Extending comprehensive services to current guests, the majority of whom can only access the meal service because of space and service limitations
- Adding new personal care services such as showers and laundry to serve up to 24 clients per day and help them re-gain a sense of dignity
- Creating the space to accommodate visiting partner agencies to meet and work with guests on-site, a key component to a one-stop-shop approach
- Improving access for people with disabilities by making the facility handicap accessible under Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines
- Creating critically needed space to accommodate the growing Home Connections program, enabling SVDP to increase the number of people placed in scattered-site permanent housing
- Providing adequate work space for program staff
- Creating a welcoming and cohesive environment through the renovation and new construction of a vibrant and modern building that also incorporates surrounding architectural elements into its design.
We the undersigned are very familiar with the valuable and worthwhile services offered by the Beans & Bread Center for the past three decades to Southeast Baltimore communities. We would like to voice our strong support for the Beans & Bread Project and ask that you do the same.
Beans & Bread has been a pillar in our community for over 33 years and has demonstrated commitment and success in serving the community, primarily by providing persons suffering from homelessness with resources to get them off the street and into housing. The programs and services at Beans & Bread offer a real solution to a very serious problem in our city.
We also believe that the new building will be a positive addition to the streetscape, a great improvement over the current cinderblock warehouse, and a valuable investment in our community. Additionally, the renovation and new addition will allow Beans & Bread to bring the clientele currently queuing outside for the meal program inside a plus for both the clients served and the community at large.
We wholeheartedly support this project which will enable Beans & Bread to better serve its existing clientele. We encourage you as an elected leader to recognize the value and significance of Beans & Bread and its proposed project by voicing and demonstrating your support.
