Demand removal of Jeremy Taylor from the East Point Ethics Board

The integrity of our ethics board is at risk due to a recent appointment to the city's Ethics Board. Jeremy Taylor was appointed to the ethics board by Councilmember Japera Hemming despite clear legal guidance from the City Attorney that his appointment was inappropriate. The City Attorney advised that this appointment contradicts the ethics board eligibility requirement stipulated in Sec. 2-508(b), as Mr. Taylor filed ethics complaints within the disallowed one-year timeframe which violates the City Charter.  

Councilmember Hemming decided to move forward with this appointment without informing her fellow councilmembers about the legal advice, which has resulted in a vote that now threatens the board’s ethical standing. Our city trusts this board to oversee and maintain ethical standards, but this appointment undermines its credibility and sets a dangerous precedent.

The ethics board should exemplify principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency, but this appointment challenges these principles. It is vital for the board to operate without conflicts of interest in order to fulfill its role effectively. We must hold Councilmember Hemming accountable for her actions and demand that Jeremy Taylor be removed from the East Point Ethics Board.  This appointment was unethical and in clear violation of the charter.  

We urge residents to come together and demand that the city council rectifies this situation by immediately removing Jeremy Taylor from the ethics board. This is not just about correcting an error; it's about preserving the standard of governance that our city deserves.
