Ask New York and Federal Officials to Help New Jersey Reject Offshore Gas Terminal

New Jersey Republicans are leading the way in an effort to stop a proposed offshore natural gas storage facility. But they need New York and federal officials to join them.

Governor Christie has already denied Liberty Natural Gas's proposed Port Ambrose Project once, but the company is now applying to federal officials for permission to build a port in the ocean, less than 25 miles offshore. Reports say the facility would dump over three million gallons of chemically treated sea water and require miles of sea floor dredging just to accommodate the pipeline, and Senator Jennifer Beck says there’s no evidence that the facility is even needed.

It will take both state governors, the Coast Guard and U.S. Maritime Administration to get the proposal approved, and the others should already be helping NJ save this marine environment from potential destruction.

Tell NY and federal officials to help NJ reject this gas storage facility.

We, the undersigned, say NY and federal officials should follow NJ’s lead in this fight against offshore gas storage terminals.

Senator Beck told the press the Ambrose facility could mean “decades of trouble” for “communities that have already been through so much.” Most important, Beck says, is that she finds no evidence that the proposed storage facility is needed, and it’s certainly not worth the risks it poses to the shipping, tourism and fishing industries.

Clean Ocean Action says the NJ Legislature’s resolution sends an important message to LNG and other who would try to industrialize the ocean - that citizens of New Jersey will “defend their beaches, marine ecosystem, and coastal economy.”

It is especially important that New York get on board with NJ’s efforts and certainly not allow its recent move to lift the ban on gas storage facilities to keep it from rejecting the Ambrose Port.

We request that the state of NY, the Coast Guard and the U.S. Maritime Administration reject the building of the Ambrose liquefied natural gas facility.

Thanks for your time.
