Self defense law in united states

I feel like it isn't right for there to be self defense laws in some states and not all, it should never be a crime for a person in the U.S to defend themselves in any life threatening situation. Some states will imprison people for merely defending themselves from harm, in stead they would prefer you to basically take whatever it is someone is trying to do to you and call 911. What they fail to realize is that if someone is coming at you in a life threatening way the last thing your thinking about is calling the law, your fight or flight come into play, if you can't run you defend yourself to save your own life point black period its not right for people to go to jail for defending themselves.
