This petition seeks protection for infant Cambodian macaques living in the temple areas of several provinces there, who are being taken from mothers to film for profitable YouTube channels. The scheme involves removing sickly or injured infants under the pretext of feeding and caring for them in private homes. Videos, made daily and posted online, are staged for with props. Arrangements were made in the cases cited below to distribute the videos on multiple channels, which are viewable by minors.
The Cambodian YouTubers have no training in feeding, care or rehabilitation of small monkeys. The macaques have been mishandled by them, received inadequate medical treatment and have had poor results in their hands. They add great stress to the mothers they were taken from for the profit they make.
Wildlife protection agencies have rescued several macaque infants recently. Heidi was rescued after months of effort on the 2nd attempt, the first was thwarted by the videographers who hid her to film for profit. She was poorly treated and caged. Amy, rescued with back injuries and infections, was treated by a reputable vet and is being rehabilitated by a wildlife protection organization.
Not so fortunate was Kaya, critically abused by a sibling. YouTube channel owners took her finally to a pet store. Eight cameramen stood around while she was given multiple injections. She died shortly after and they posted videos of her in death for additional monetary gain.
Please end suffering and provide protection from the videographers for these infant macaques stolen from their mothers. The Cambodian government is requested to deny permission to owners of monetized YouTube channels applying to rremove infant macaques for feeding and care and in the exception require they not film them.
