In 1937 hemp was outlawed because it was classified as a harmful drug and categorized under marijuana. During that time and long before, hemp was being milled and used for home uses and linens. Why we need to get a license to grow hemp where we have two townships called east and west Hempfield is outrageous! We even have hemp road and hempland road! In an old book about Lancaster, from 1851, it talks about East and West Hempfield being original townships and thus named that for the large quantities of hemp grown here. One of the oldest mills was a hemp mill built buy a guy before 1740. This was before we started saw or grist mills and was literally our first means of creating an industry! I believe us in Lancaster should be grandfathered into growing this native plant freely and without hassle of applications and licenses from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government. More importantly I believe that we should be able to find the native species of hemp that grows in our land wild and test them for beneficial uses to the soil and body!
