The biotech companies, like Monsanto, are using their wealth & political power to force farmers, worldwide, to buy and plant GM (genetically modified) seeds ... or GMOs.. to grow crops of unproven benefit on questionable promises of increased yields or profits. Most of these GM seeds have genetic modifications that include terminator genes that make seeds from crops planted worthless so farmers are forced to come back and buy more seeds at ever increasing prices. GM crops are known to be harmful to bees & essential soil organisms. The GM crops often release novel transgenic bacteria or viruses harmful to biospheres. Mutations from GM crops can travel to other cells, tissue systems, & organs. In brief, GM seeds/ crops have few if any proven benefits and a long list of documented potential harm.
Over 800 scientists rom 84 nations have asked for bans on GM seeds & crops. The Union of Concerned Scientists has presented a long list of reservation about GM/ GMO seeds & crops. A number of FDA scientists have expressed profound fears. At the same time, there are reports that a number of university scientists have been bribed, by the biotech companies, to withhold research information on potentially dangerous side-effects of GM/ GMO seeds & crops. Monsanto has used its ifluence with Congress, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Agency for Intl. Development (USAID) to pressure Third World nations to force their farmers to utilize GM seeds/ crops and abandon proven & traditional farming practices. Monsanto seems to be the "driving force" behind this effort for biotech companies to gain full control of global food production. The executives at Monsanto, and Monsanto's Board, seem to only be concerned with increased profitiability with little concern for possible harm they may cause to others and our planet.
Given all the above facts, we must demand that the U.S. Congress and legislators of every nation create laws to protect proven and traditional farming practices ... while also requiring extensive scientific testing of GM/ GMO seeds and crops.
The biotech companies have no right to seek control of all crop production, worldwide. Moreover, these biotech companies should not be allowed to promote or sell their GM/ GMO seeds & crops until extensive scientific testing & evidence provides credible, unbiased third party documentation that GMs cause no harm.
