A 14-month-old bear cub is being nursed back to health by the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center
after being found injured at Heavenly Ski Resort.
“They saw him limping around the first day and then the next day,
he was laying on the snow and that is why they called in some help,”
Tom Millham, with Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, said Tuesday,on March 4.
The cub was named Heavenly – after where he was found – was rescued just in time.
The cub had come out of hibernation more than a month early and run into some kind of trouble.
“Something happened to his back and his side.
It could have been a coyote or a dog – it could have been another bear. Anything.
He could have fallen out of a tree off a rock,” Millham said.
The bear cub at this age should have still been with his mother.
Millham says he’s not sure what happened to mom,
only that this crazy weather is what drew the cub from its safe home early.
“Because of the fact it’s been warm, there is not a lot of snow,” Millham said.
“Some of the animals are coming out of hibernation.
We had a chipmunk on our back deck the other day and they don’t normally come out till April,”
The wildlife center currently has three other cubs. Once Heavenly gets healthy and is fattened up,
he will be put in with the other three cubs. Right now, nutrition and healing are top priority.
Once he’s ready, Heavenly will be released back into the wild.
It will cost Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center around $1,000 to rehab Heavenly.
