With the appointment of Tom Price as the Trump administration's health czar, the repeal of Obamacare is virtually assured. Health care in America will likely go back to being a market commodity like any other: available to those who can afford to subsidize enormous private profits of insurers, health care corporations and Big Pharma. With a GDP of $2.4 trillion California, is the world's sixth-largest economy, currently running a substantial surplus. It is time for the state, and its Democratic supermajority to establish a single payer health care system. We should protect millions of Californians who are at risk of losing access to health care. As the state does in environmental policies it should also lead by example, make affordable public health care a human right and stand up to the coming Trump onslaught on the welfare state.

Healthcare should be a right -- not a privilege just for those who can afford it. That's why I authored SB 562, the Healthy California Act.
I firmly believe that single-payer healthcare is the only vehicle that we can use to guarantee healthcare for all of our people.
