Tanzania: Lifetime imprisonment for elephant poachers!!

  • da: Sophie Simonson

Over 10,000 elephants are getting slaughtered every year!
Poachers are caught, brought in, fined and released. Giving them a chance to go back and do it all again!!
"wildlife rangers are ill-paid, and punishment for a convicted poacher can be as little as a $13 fine" (John Burnett, October 25th 2012).

Poaching is inexusable and poachers should be given the maximum penalty of life imprisonment with no parole.

Dear President Jakaya M. Kikwete & Khamis Kagasheki

HIGHER PENALTIES FOR ELEPHANT POACHERS

Tanzania is known for its wildlife and wildlife is a part of Tanzania's heritage.

More serious action needs to be taken against the people that aim to disrupt this heritage and make a bad name for Tanzania.
Elephants are an endangered species and the demand for Ivory is rising steadily throughout the world, especially in Asia. As stated by John Burnett, over 10,000 elephants are slaughtered in Tanzania every year. With a elephant population of 110,000 elephants, we are looking at elephant extinction in Tanzania by 2023 (Real Africa Safari Trails, 2012).

Poaching as you know is inexcusable and more heavy penalties should be imposed on those caught and convicted. A $13 fine is nothing compared to the amount these poachers will be making in selling the Ivory.
If these poachers aren’t made examples out of, poaching won’t stop. That is why we suggest lifetime imprisonment for anyone caught with Ivory, without the chance of parole.

Poaching is a serious crime, and should be stopped!

Thank you for your support in this matter.
