We, the undersigned patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates, urge HCSC to provide reimbursement coverage for the FDA-cleared migraine treatment device, Nerivio in accordance with your existing medical policy and applicable coverage criteria.
Migraine is a disabling neurological disease that affects every aspect of daily life, including employment, family responsibilities, mental health, and quality of life. Many patients living with chronic and episodic migraine have exhausted traditional therapies, experienced medication side effects, or remain inadequately treated despite years of care.
Nerivio is an FDA-cleared medical device developed to help patients manage migraine safely and effectively. It represents an important non-pharmaceutical treatment option for patients who may not tolerate, respond to, or safely use conventional medications.
Despite the existence of medical policies recognizing coverage criteria for this treatment, patients and providers continue to experience widespread reimbursement denials, nonpayment, delayed claims processing, and inconsistent application of policy standards. These barriers prevent patients from accessing medically necessary care that may significantly improve functioning and reduce disability.
Failure to reimburse approved and eligible claims has serious consequences for patients, including:
• Increased migraine frequency and severity
• Missed work and lost productivity
• Reduced ability to care for family and children
• Increased emergency department visits and healthcare utilization
• Medication overuse and avoidable side effects
• Financial hardship and inequitable access to care
We respectfully request that Anthem:
1. Reimburse claims for eligible patients receiving Nerivio consistent with existing medical policy criteria
2. Ensure transparent and consistent claims review practices
3. Provide clear guidance to providers regarding coding and billing requirements
4. Expedite review of denied claims involving FDA-cleared migraine device therapy
5. Engage with patients, providers, and headache specialists to improve access to evidence-based migraine care
Patients living with migraine deserve access to medically appropriate, FDA-cleared treatment options without unnecessary administrative barriers.
We urge Anthem to align reimbursement practices with established policy standards and prioritize equitable access to migraine care.
