Our schools have adopted a state mandated policies on how to deal with bullies. That is great, except that if it is not acted upon, they are just words on paper and do not mean much. What if your child was the victim of bullying? What if they are and you don't know? What would you want the school to do about it?
I am scared for all children, who do not have a voice and are being victimized daily by these bullies. What is it going to take for the schools to take notice? We do not need children ( or irate relative) walking into the school shooting people because they feel that is the only way to stop what's going on. We do not need children, thinking of commiting suicide because of the mistreatment by peers and the seeming disregard by adults to help them.
Most children are not bullied once or twice, it happens almost daily for years. When will we take notice? We hear of the school shootings and suicides of students, we all feel sad for the families. It will be to late when it happens you and I.
Fact: Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75% of school violence. Fact: Victims of bullying are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than student who are not bullied. Fact: Girls bully in groups more than boys do. Fact: The average bullying episode last only 37 seconds. Teachers notice or intervene in only one in 25 incidents. Fact: Boys are least likely to report bullying.
