In one of the strangest political reversals in American history, Republican Senator Josh Hawley has filed a bill to repeal a bill he voted for not two weeks ago and undo the colossal cuts to Medicaid that the GOP passed in Trump’s Big Awful Bill.

In Hawley’s proposed bill, titled the “Protect Medicaid and Rural Hospitals Act,” he aims to “repeal the changes to Medicaid State provider tax authority and State directed payments made by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and provide increased funding for the rural health transformation program,” the text reads. It also seeks more investments in rural hospitals by doubling a fund passed in the spending bill to $100 billion.

The consequences of the billions upon billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid will be beyond disastrous for the American people, especially the poorest people in the reddest states. Josh Hawley and all the rest of the GOP know this — that’s why he’s trying to get it reversed before it’s too late.
