This petition is drafted to address the renewed and intensified interest in the acquisition or annexation of Greenland by the United States administration in early 2026.
Petition: Respect the Sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark
To: President Donald J. Trump The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, D.C. 20500
Statement of Purpose
We, the undersigned, write with a sense of urgency to express our firm opposition to recent statements and policy directives regarding the acquisition, purchase, or annexation of Greenland. We urge your administration to immediately cease all efforts to take control of Greenland—whether through "real estate" transactions, diplomatic pressure, or the threat of military force—and to respect the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
Why This Matters
Respect for Self-Determination: Recent polls indicate that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States. The people of Greenland (Kalaallit) are not a commodity to be traded; they are a distinct people with their own government, culture, and democratic right to decide their own future.
Adherence to International Law: Any attempt to annex or forcibly take control of Greenland would be a clear violation of international law and the U.N. Charter. Such actions undermine the rules-based international order that the United States helped build and has historically defended.
The Integrity of NATO: Denmark is a founding member of NATO and a vital ally. Threatening the territorial integrity of a fellow NATO member creates an unprecedented crisis within the alliance, emboldens adversaries, and risks the collapse of the most successful military partnership in history.
Environmental and Indigenous Protection: Greenland is a frontline in the global climate crisis. Its management must remain in the hands of those who live there and understand its delicate Arctic ecosystem, rather than being treated as a site for industrial or military expansion against the will of its inhabitants.
Existing Strategic Cooperation: The United States already enjoys a productive defense relationship with Greenland through the Pituffik Space Base and the 1951 bilateral agreement. Security concerns regarding Russia and China can and should be addressed through these existing diplomatic channels, not through territorial takeover.
Our Formal Request
We respectfully demand that the Trump Administration:
Formally renounce any plans or intentions to purchase or annex Greenland.
Affirm Respect for the 1951 and 2004 agreements that govern the current U.S. presence in Greenland.
Engage in Multilateral Diplomacy with Denmark and the Greenlandic government to address Arctic security concerns without infringing upon their sovereignty.
Cease Rhetoric involving the use of military force or "economic pressure" against our allies in the Kingdom of Denmark.
Conclusion
True national security is built on stable alliances, respect for democracy, and the rule of law. By leaving Greenland alone, the United States will demonstrate its commitment to these values and ensure that the Arctic remains a region of cooperation rather than conflict.
Greenland is not for sale. It is not for taking. It belongs to its people.
