As an 8th grade student, I find myself overwhelmed by the insurmountable amount of homework, projects, and extracurricular activities demanding my attention. One of the most daunting tasks we have to tackle is the arduous task of writing Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) essays in our science classes. While designed to enhance our understanding and critical thinking, in reality, these exercises have become a burden, adding stress rather than fostering educational growth.
The CER method, although well-intentioned, often fails to take into account the individuality of learning styles and the varying levels of workload from other subjects. The rigidity of CERs constrains our creativity and makes science feel more like a composition class rather than a fascinating exploration of the natural world.
Furthermore, educators need to recognize the growing body of research which suggests that overly standardized writing assignments do not necessarily equate to improved comprehension or knowledge retention. A study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology highlights that students are more likely to excel when provided with diverse and adaptable methods of expression and evaluation.
I urge educational policymakers and curriculum developers to reconsider the implementation of CER in 8th-grade science classes. By removing or modifying this requirement, we can alleviate stress and encourage a deeper, more authentic engagement with the subject matter. Alternatives such as project-based learning, discussions, and interactive labs could replace CERs, providing a more balanced and enriching educational experience.
