Scioto County Dog Pound of Portsmouth, Ohio Stop Breed Discrimination of Pitbulls and Pitbull Mixes

Did you know there is a vintage poster of a white Pitbull with the American flag tied around it's neck and in the poster it has a line of the Star Spangled Banner? The United States used the Pitbull in the military and as a bomb/narcotics dog and still do. Did you know the United States Customs and Border Protection trained a full Pitbull named Popsicle in Front Royal, VA about 60 miles from Washington DC? Popsicle done a lot of great work as a working dog and one particular he was on the news. He sniffed out a truck in Texas that had over $125 Million worth of drugs. He was famous nationally from being on the NBC Nightly News and more. The dog retired in 2002.

The Scioto County Dog Pound has proposed a new Pitbull adoption policy, which will give major disadvantages for Pitbulls and Pitbull mixes to get adopted due to stringent requirements by the County. It is breed discrimination because it labels the animal has a dangerous dog and has different set of adoption rules compare to other dogs in the shelter. The proposals will likely yield to less adoption of Pitbulls and Pitbull mixes and dogs being euthanized.

The Proposals are the following:

NO Pitbulls or Pitbull mixes will be adopted to a household that already has another dog or a cat

NO PitBulls or Pitbull mixes will be adopted to a home who has a child age 10 or under

ALL potential adopters must PAY for a BACKGROUND check and if a felony is found they will not be approved. If married then both spouses must provide a background check.

The new owner must get a liability insurance in case the dog causes harm or death to an individual(s).

The new owner must obtain a dangerous dog registration certificate from the county, a tag attached to the collar that identifies the dog as a dangerous animal to the people, and finally the collar and tag must be worn by the dog at all times.

Pitbulls are discriminated and it's the biases that prevent them from getting adopted and into good homes along with becoming working or service dogs. If Martin Luther King was alive he would remove it because it's discriminates the dogs. No dog should be treated differently due to gender, breed, mixes, and all instead respect and love all dogs as special and good.

Dear Scioto County Dog Pound Management,

We are greatly concerned about the new proposals for Pitbull and Pitbull mixes that it would yield to less adoptions and more euthanization of these dogs. The rules causes major disadvantages which would prevent people to consider adopting these dogs due to stringent requirements. People are asking for fair and uniform adoption rules for Pitbulls and Pibull mixes when compared to dogs of other breeds or mixes in the shelter. The new proposals claim that ALL Pitbulls and Pitbull mixes are dangerous to society and potential adopters have to take additional steps in order to adopt this dog while other dogs can be adopted easily. The new sets of rules that are being proposed lean heavily towards breed discrimination and it is unacceptable that these dogs are discriminated due to negative stereotypes. People are asking for revision of the new proposal rules that would not label the dogs as detrimental to society, but rather these dogs are no different than other dogs within the shelter.

Pitbull and Pitbull mixes supporters are outraged and demand changes to the new proposals and want breed discrimination to be removed. These dogs can be placed in a home with small children, other animals, and so forth just like any other dogs. We ask for revision of the new rules and that are not discriminatory when compared to adoption of other dogs in the shelter or other shelters in the nation. I appreciate your cooperation and we ask for fair and uniform adoption rules that would lead to more adoptions. Thank You!
