Petition to Legalize Marijuana in North Carolina

Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, is a plant that may be used to smoke in order to create a buzz or high. However, since 1937 its recreational use or possession is illegal under United States Federal Law, and is classified as a schedule 1 drug. This puts marijuana in the same category as heroin.

Not one person in recorded history has died from direct use of marijuana, making it non-lethal. Plus, with limited research, it has been proven to alleviate or even cure some medical conditions such as seizures, skin cancer, glaucoma, and several other illnesses.

Cannabis also has the potential to be a major cash crop. Although it is illegal, marijuana generates $36 million annually, which is more than the annual revenue of corn and wheat combined. Colorado, who voted to legalize marijuana in 2012, has been utilizing its cannabis tax towards school construction. In its first month alone, Colorado collected $2 million in cannabis tax. In one year, those numbers can reach as much as $36 million a year (in just one state alone).

If North Carolina, a state which decriminalized up to an ounce of marijuana possession, were to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, its economy will skyrocket. The revenue may provide plentiful educational, health, and/or construction funding.
