Media bashing of indoor tanning is unfair and has to stop!

The Tanning Industry has been maligned by the media for too long and the dramatic 'stories' and half-truths need to stop! On behalf of the group of small business owners that make up the Indoor Tanning Salon Owners, their clients, potential clients & the general public, we need to stop the media scare!
The Indoor Tanning Industry has been the target of a media feeding frenzy for years. This is allowing half-truths to be told, facts overlooked and studies ignored. It allows the media to feed the public the sensationalism that people crave and at what cost? They are trying to destroy an industry, take away jobs and close businesses all because they don't want the other side heard. THE TRUTH!
The medical community and the cosmetic companies are backing this effort by the media because it is money in their pocket. Everytime they can scare you into thinking you are at risk, they can sell you cosmetics with SPF in them, they can charge you for unnecessary doctor visits and they can continue to take your money. This has gotten out of hand and the buck stops HERE! Now is the time to be proactive, speak out, be heard and stand up for your rights! The medical community is allowed to claim whatever they want but the tanning industry has a gag-order imposed that makes it impossible for any of us to defend ourselves or the industry. We need to have this gag-order lifted! The press would have you think that UV in any form is dangerous and we are not allowed to rebutt this. As the FDA / FTC has gagged the Indoor Tanning Professionals from being able to advertise the BENEFITS of UV Light and the DANGERS of Under Exposure it has made us into their bound and gagged prisoner. There is Good, Bad and Ugly in everything. The real journalist should be dealing with ALL of these.
Citing a recent article written by Paul Recer entitled, "Tanning Salons Linked to Cancer Risk": This scare-tactic was picked up by over 130 media centers including the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the NY Post! The Associated Press (AP) provides content to more than 15,000 news outlets with a daily reach of 1 billion people around the world. Its multimedia services are distributed by satellite and the Internet to more than 120 nations, and as such, it should shoulder the responsibility for FAIR and ACCURATE news reporting. We all grew up looking to the News (print and broadcast) as a way to learn the facts. The Indoor Tanning Industry is no stranger to being a TARGET for Media Sensationalism. Indeed, the stories of ‘cooked organs’ are only slightly less horrendous then the ‘Science and Health’ Headings of news stories such as Paul Recer’s "Tanning Salons Linked to Cancer Risk" October 2003.
We are now coming to the conclusion that BIG MONEY and BIG BUSINESS AGENDAS can and do supercede the need to providing the general public with the HONEST TRUTH. This is just ONE example of the injustices done to the Tanning Industry every day across the country! Recer's article, and the abstract from the research study differ from each other. The abstract conclusion reads: Conclusions: Our results confirm previous findings that hair color, number of nevi on the legs, and history of sunburn are risk factors for melanoma and suggest that use of a solarium is also associated with melanoma risk. Adolescence and early adulthood appear to be among the most sensitive age periods for the effects of sunburn and solarium use on melanoma risk. However, it may be too early to see the full effect of adult exposures in this cohort.

The conclusion purposely separated solarium use from the factors that ARE risks for melanoma, Recer did not.
The article (and many others like it) seek to only forward two agendas; (1) a Sensational Read for the news source to chalk up as a ‘winner’ (2) to promote an agenda of SUN SCARE for major advertisers like the Billion Dollar Cosmetic Companies that are pushing sunscreens. The FACTS are NOT necessary in articles like these. The author expects the American and World Wide Reading Public to accept the words – as is - it MUST be TRUE; it’s in the paper!

Make your voice heard...whether you are an avid tanner, a lotion manufacturer or someone who has never even tanned, you need to speak out now to ensure that the FACTS are told and the ability to tan will prosper. This petition is being sent out on the behalf of Indoor Tanning Clients, Indoor Tanning Salon Owners and the general public, whose very health is put at risk by agenda riddled Reports and Articles that do not provide all the facts - worse, that are providing misinformation in a way that could cause the public to make Health and Lifestyle choices that can harm their body in years to come. The Associated Press has the RESPONSIBILITY to provide the TRUTH. Not the American Medical Association’s spin on the Truth. Not the Billion Dollar Advertising Baby of the Cosmetic and SPF companies’ version of the Truth. Not the Indoor Tanning Industry’s philosophy of the Truth. JUST the HONEST, RESEARCHED, VERIFIED facts gained from all sides of this very important issue!!!

· The public deserves to hear the facts concerning the RISKS of Over Exposure and Under Exposure to Natural and Artificial sunlight.

· The Service Providers of Indoor Tanning deserve to be treated with respect and not attacked by the media with biased and slanted attempts to shut down their businesses.

· The public deserves to be aware of the hidden agenda behind the yearly bashing of all Indoor Tanning services – the concern for their skin is NOT the cause for these attacks, rather it is the almighty dollar that spurs it on.

· The science behind the benefits of UV Light and the benefits it has on the human body, and psychological well being SHOULD be presented along side any ‘fact finding mission’ on the Benefits and Risks of Ultraviolet Light.

· The general public deserves to be treated with respect and dignity – not a bunch of mindless sheep. Provide a WELL BALANCED presentation of the facts of all sides of the UV Issue and allow the Humans that read them make their OWN INFORMED DECISIONS --- STOP scaring them with manipulated reports that only serve to misrepresent the reality of Sunlight and Indoor Tanning

You, the reader of this petition, may have the right to fair and accurate information in the news your read and view - BUT you are NOT GETTING IT.

By signing this petition - you are VOICING your DEMAND to have your rights respected, regardless if you Tan indoors or not. The tyranny of Health Care, it's constant seeking of the additional Co-Pays, it's financially gifted relationship with the Major Cosmetics and Sunscreen companies needs to STOP being the deciding factor on WHAT IS PRESENTED TO YOU AS TRUTH. This is not only the AP, but any news source that spreads biased information should be held accountable for the health risks they are potentially the cause of.
