Don't let government succumb to the intense lobbying from oil and gas companies at your expense

Canada needs to take action now to reduce methane emissions, and eliminate them entirely by 2030. The government should not bow to pressure from oil and gas companies, who need to take responsibility for their impacts on human health, the environment, and climate change.

Why? Here are some reasons for the need for immediate action.

  • Methane is often emitted with other even more toxic gases, like benzene, a known carcinogen. Canadian citizens need to be protected from harmful releases of these toxic gases from nearby oil and gas facilities.
  • Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Over a 20 year period, its global warming impact is 84 times greater than carbon dioxide.
  • Reducing methane emissions is one of the lowest cost ways to reduce emissions that lead to global warming.

Act today and add your name to thousands of other Canadians demanding the federal government to take action on methane.
I want Canada to take action now to reduce methane emissions, and eliminate them entirely by 2030. The government should not bow to pressure from oil and gas companies, who need to take responsibility for their impacts on human health, the environment, and climate change.

There are very good reasons why methane regulations are needed now. The release of methane and other toxic gases from oil and gas facilities cause health impacts on surrounding communities. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Reducing methane emissions will greatly help Canada meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. It is unacceptable for Canadians to have to wait five more years to see the government fully implement methane regulations.

It's time for Canada to catch up to regulations in several U.S. states – including California, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and Utah – and end harmful and wasteful practices that allow methane to escape into the environment.
