Fast-Fashion Polluter Shein's Attempt to Gobble Up This Ethical Slow-Fashion Brand Would Hurt the Earth, Workers, and Consumers

The clothing company Everlane built its reputation on sustainability, "radical transparency" of its supply chain, and "ethical factories" with humane labor practices. Now, however, the company's board has just approved an agreement that would sell Everlane... to Shein.

Shein, a Chinese clothing retailer, has become infamous as the "biggest polluter in fast fashion," according to researchers at Yale University. That's from both its clothing waste, and its shocking level of carbon emissions - which have only been increasing. In fact, Shein is not even fast fashion - it is actually considered ultra fast-fashion. Every day, the company says it adds an unbelievable 700 - 1,000 new styles to its website, many sold at prices as low as $5 or $15 per item. The company has contributed to literal mountains of clothing waste like one in the Chilean desert.

And Shein has come under fire for horrendous labor practices, including allegedly using child labor, implementing excessive working hours (as many as 75 hours per week), and paying abhorrently low wages. The Attorney General of Texas is even suing Shein for apparently selling clothing that contained dangerous chemicals - such as lead.

How could Everlane - a company that's supposed to care about ethics, workers, and the environment - ever sell out to a company like Shein?

Luckily, even though the board has approved this sale, the deal hasn't actually gone through yet. There might still be a chance to turn this around. Sign the petition to demand a halt to Shein's attempted acquisition of Everlane!
