Social Responsibility for New York Corporations

Too often, corporations place greed over societal good. But Benefit Corporation legislation would make it possible for companies to create structures that are both profitable and socially responsible.

This week, Governor Cuomo will have the chance to pass a bill that will make New York the 6th state to allow businesses to operate as Benefit Corporations. Under the legislation, benefit corporations would be required to pursue a positive material impact on society and the environment as determined against a third party standard.

The third party standard would encourage companies to pay a living wage, provide health benefits, and use renewable materials, in addition to dedicating resources to the arts, the environment, public health, or other societal benefits.

Help show New York that corporations can be both socially friendly and highly profitable. Tell Governor Cuomo to pass Benefit Corporation legislation today!
I am writing to urge you to sign the legislation that would allow businesses to organize as Benefit Corporations. This legislation, which has already been unanimously passed by the New York Senate and Assembly, would encourage companies to pursue a positive material impact on society and the environment. It would also push an increase in corporations' purposefulness, accountability, and transparency with regard to society and the environment.

With the signing of this legislation, New York would become the 6th state to show corporations that profitability and public responsibility can co-exist in the business world.
