Tell the Commerford Zoo: Release Elephants Beulah, Karen, and Minnie to a Sanctuary

For decades, Beulah, Karen, and Minnie have been exploited as "performers" in the Commerford Zoo's traveling circus. From being transported in tiny trailers throughout the year, to spending their days giving rides to and performing for strangers, to being threatened with a bullhook, these elephants have suffered greatly.

Science proves that elephants are highly social, emotionally complex, self-aware, autonomous problem-solvers and tool users who have a sense of self, remember the past and plan for the future, show empathy for other beings (not just other elephants), and mourn their dead, among other qualities and capacities.

Elephants who are forced to live in captivity don't get to exercise free will or engage in their natural behaviors. In turn, this causes them great psychological harm and physical deterioration.

The Performing Animal Welfare Society's (PAWS) elephant sanctuary has agreed to provide Beulah, Karen, and Minnie with lifelong care at no cost to the Commerford Zoo. At PAWS, these elephants will be able to live out the rest of their lives with other elephants in an environment similar to their natural habitat.

It is time we restored Beulah's, Karen's, and Minnie's freedom as much as possible. Urge the Commerford Zoo to release these elephants to the PAWS sanctuary now.

Dear Commerford Zoo,

For decades, Beulah, Karen, and Minnie have lived unnatural lives as "performers" in your traveling circus. These elephants have suffered enough. It is time for them to reclaim the freedom that was stolen from them so long ago.

Elephants are highly social, emotionally complex, self-aware, autonomous problem-solvers and tool users who have a sense of self, remember the past and plan for the future, show empathy for other beings (not just other elephants), and mourn their dead, among other qualities and capacities.

Forcing Beulah, Karen, and Minnie to live in a captive setting that prevents them from exercising free will and engaging in their innate behaviors causes them great psychological harm and physical deterioration. From being transported in tiny trailers throughout the year, to spending their days giving rides to and performing for strangers, to being poked and threatened with a bullhook, the elephants have suffered greatly, whether you wish to acknowledge it or not.

Please release Beulah, Karen, and Minnie to the Performing Animal Welfare Society's (PAWS) elephant sanctuary. At PAWS, which has agreed to provide the elephants with lifelong care at no cost to you, they will be able to live out the rest of their lives with other elephants in an environment similar to their natural habitat. There, the elephants will spend their days exploring an expansive habitat containing hills, large oak and other native trees, grass, rocks, native brush, lakes, ponds, and pools in an appropriate climate. Most importantly, PAWS is a place where Beulah, Karen, and Minnie's autonomy and right to live freely will be respected.

Do the right thing. Send Beulah, Karen, and Minnie to PAWS.

Sincerely,
