No Taxpayer Dollars to Fund a new Redskins Stadium: Take the Danifesto Pledge!

Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins are looking to leave FedEx Field behind and potentially move into Virginia. For fans, this could be great. But for Virginia taxpayers, this could be an incredibly raw deal.

Snyder, like other professional sports team owners, is one of the wealthiest Americans, and the Redskins make him even more money. In fact, the Redskins are the 5th most valuable franchise in the entire league, valued at nearly $3 billion Yet, Snyder is seeking taxpayer help to fund the building of a new stadium.

Professional sports teams are private companies that provide little public good and lots of private gain. Taxpayer subsidies simply further line owners' already-deep pockets. We do not believe that taxpayer money should ever be used to fund any amount of a new Redskins stadium unless the below points are addressed:

  • Discounted tickets for residents of VA
  • Low-income seating lottery
  • Veteran seating lottery
  • Free use for VA public schools and youth leagues in between games and off season
  • Environmentally conscious construction and design
  • Free parking for vehicles registered in VA
  • Reasonably priced concessions
  • Transportation Service for Virginians out of area

With the gubernatorial election just around the corner, voters deserve to know that the candidates won't bow to Snyder's demands for our money. Tell the candidates to release a statement pledging to abide by these points in negotiations with the Redskins or any other major or minor league sports teams. Take the Danifesto pledge.
Dear Candidate,

As Washington Redskins' owner Dan Snyder looks for new places to locate the team's stadium, he's considering a move to Virginia. I'm deeply concerned that in order to win his business, taxpayers like me will be asked to pay for part of his new stadium.

Snyder, like all professional sports teams owners, is extremely wealthy, and the Redskins continue to augment his wealth. It is a private company that provides little public good and lots of private gain. While, as a fan, it would be nice to have the team closer to home, Snyder and Redskins can afford to build their own stadium without the help and hard-earned dollars of Viriginians.

I'm asking you and every gubernatorial candidate to release a public statement saying that you won't authorize any kind of taxpayer support for the construction of a new Redskins stadium, unless Snyder agrees to the following conditions:

  • Discounted tickets for residents of VA

  • Low-income seating lottery

  • Veteran seating lottery

  • Free use for VA public schools and youth leagues in between games and off season

  • Environmentally conscious construction and design

  • Free parking for vehicles registered in VA

  • Reasonably priced concessions

  • Transportation Service for Virginians out of area
