Despite laws banning mail-order brides in other countries, South Korea is seeing a dramatic increase in the number of men purchasing foreign brides. The effect is increased domestic violence and human trafficking.
Mail-order brides often enter into marriage as a way to escape unfavorable living conditions, or to help out their families. Upon arriving in South Korea, these women experience intense culture clash with their new husbands. Things like language barriers, inability to get along with family, culinary issues, and problems performing domestic work often lead to conflict resulting in divorce, abuse and, in severe cases, murder.
Furthermore, illegal mail-order bride companies have contributed to human trafficking. Men essentially buy these women. They often are not seen as human beings so much as property.
Help stop illegal mail-order bride arrangements. Tell the South Korean government to carefully investigate foreign brides and protect them from violence.
The increase in mail-order-brides in South Korea has lead to an increase in human trafficking and domestic violence.
While some of these marriages may end happily, a large portion lead to divorce, abuse, and, in severe cases, murder as culture clash and servitude of the bride become problems for the married couple.
Further contributing to the problem is the legality of these unions. Many brides come from countries that prohibit mail-order-brides. It then becomes an issue of human trafficking.
The South Korean government needs to crack down on illegal mail-order brides and develop ways to ensure the safety and security of brides soon to be married to South Korean men by better investigating, and regulating the influx of foreign brides.
