British Columbia: Does Gordon Campbell Deserve the Order of BC?

Despite his shockingly low approval rating of nine percent, former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell is being awarded the Order of British Columbia. Campbell, who was forced to resign from office in 2010, will now be bestowed the government's "highest honor."

In 2009, Campbell announced that British Columbia would move towards a Harmonized Sales Tax. Although political opponents, news media, and most members of the public opposed the measure, Campbell's party implemented it anyway. And though Campbell had not mentioned it during his election season, a freedom of information request granted in September 2010 showed that Campbell's party had been planning the tax hike long before the announcement.

The indignities inflicted on British Columbians during Gordon Campbell's stint as premier are all too fresh in citizens' minds. Tell the British Columbian government to reconsider giving Gordon Campbell the Order of British Columbia.
I am writing to urge you to reconsider granting Gordon Campbell the Order of British Columbia.

Many Canadians are still infuriated with Mr. Campbell for "sneaking" the Harmonized Sales Tax into law during his tenure as premier of British Columbia.

The Order of the British Columbia is the highest honor that B.C. can bestow; to give it to Mr. Campbell now, when the majority of British Columbians are still reeling from his resignation, does a disservice both to Mr. Campbell and to the citizens of British Columbia.

I urge you to rethink your decision to give Gordon Campbell the Order of British Columbia.
