Help Employers See Past their Misconceptions About Blind Employees

Every Canadian deserves the chance to find meaningful work. Yet, too many people with sight loss are passed over for job opportunities. In a recent survey, a whopping 70 percent of employers said, all things being equal, they would choose to hire a sighted job candidate over someone who is blind. This isn't based on their ability to do the job, work ethic, or basic credentials. This simply isn't fair, and it's something we have to change.

Unfortunately, outdated misconceptions about blindness are still rampant. Many employers wrongly believe blind candidates can't do the job, they'll need constant help, they'll hurt themselves in the workplace, or it'll be too expensive to accommodate their "special needs."

What many people don't realize is that people with sight loss can and do work in a wide range of fields – from science to engineering, law, technology, finance, creative arts and many more. Yet, 63% of employees with sight loss don't have a job, often because employers can't see past their mistaken beliefs.

Add your name to raise awareness about the challenges Canadians with sight loss face in the workplace and to support programs that help them overcome barriers and get access to the same opportunities as everyone else.
