Recently, a series of devastating earthquakes struck already suffering children and families in Afghanistan. People facing hunger, hardship and deep poverty have now lost their homes, loved ones and livelihoods.
Over 22 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance to survive, including 498,000 people impacted by the earthquakes. But the administration terminated all lifesaving humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan in April– and remains silent in the wake of this tragedy.
We cannot turn our backs on children and families in desperate need. I urge you to call on the administration to provide immediate relief to Afghanistan including food, clean water, shelter and health care.
These earthquakes killed over 2,200 people – more than half of them children – and injured at least 3,640. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams reach remote, mountainous areas cut off by rockfalls.
Tens of thousands are living in tents, makeshift shelters or informal camps. Entire villages have lost their crops, livestock and livelihoods. Mothers and children are struggling to access critical nutrition and health services in overburdened, undersupplied facilities.
The longer this crisis goes unanswered, the more families will suffer.
