Non-Pet Animal Protection
Animal abuse is not limited to dogs or cats yet in Alabama dogs and cats are the only animals with any real protection.
Sir;
We the undersigned are appalled at the lack of adequate non-pet protection laws in this state. While other states have laws that deal harshly with those who abuse and/or neglect any animal while maintaining agricultural tax breaks Alabama does not. We falsely believe that Sheriffs, Police or USDA personal set aside for animal cases will remove those in immediate danger but the cold reality is they leave them to face even more danger. They in fact no longer have the power to remove non-pet animals in danger even if a Veterinarian has recommended removal. More often than not, the owners are given a vague warning along with a time period to comply. Once the representatives of the law have left the animals are either moved, where care declines at a faster rate, or killed to evade the flimsy animal protection law of this state. More is spent by the unscrupulous owner in moving the animals than would probably have been levied in fines against them for the misdemeanor offense of non-pet cruelty. There is no justification for the out right killing of any animal under these circumstances nor should there ever be.
We implore you to return the authority to seize animals in immediate danger from abusive owners and call for a law to be put in place making it a felony for a death as a direct result from abuse and/or neglect of an agricultural or non-pet animal under human care .
Thank You
