Stop Taxpayer-Funded Abuses of Farm Animals

The NY Times recently exposed horrific abuses of animals at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska. The Times found that this taxpayer-funded federal facility allowed thousands of animals to starve to death, locked pigs in steam chambers until they died, and left newborn lambs to starve, freeze, or get battered to death by hail. These abuses were permitted to occur because the facility, and others like it, fall under a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act.

Sen. Cory Booker and Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Michael Fitzpatrick, Vern Buchanan and Louise Slaughter are introducing legislation to close that loophole. The Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Endeavors (AWARE) Act, HR 746/S 388, would protect animals used in agricultural research at federal facilities. Your representatives need to hear that you support this legislation.

Take action by urging your two U.S. Senators and your U.S. Representative to cosponsor a bill to protect farm animals used in agricultural research.
Subject: Please end taxpayer-funded cruelty toward animals

Dear Legislator,

As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor a bill to protect animals used in agricultural research at federal facilities. The New York Times' investigation at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center made clear that our tax dollars are being used to fund cruel and unnecessary experiments on animals. The Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Endeavors (AWARE) Act, HR 746/S 388, would close the loophole in the Animal Welfare Act that allows these abuses to occur.

At the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska, animals were starved, baked, and frozen to death. This sort of cruelty has no place at a research facility, especially one funded with our tax dollars. Please cosponsor a bill to stop this cruelty.
