Save Child Care and After School Programs for NYC Kids!

  • da: Children's Aid

For the fifth straight year, Mayor Bloomberg has slashed early childhood and after-school education programs in his budget proposal. Decimating these critical programs for needy children is the wrong choice for New York City's future!

Every dollar spent on high-quality children's programs for a disadvantaged child creates up to $9 in future benefits, such as more productive workers and fewer dollars spent on publicly subsidized health care, prisons and more.

In addition, kids who are consistently involved in stimulating educational activities -- like those in quality after-school programs -- are more likely to go to college, get jobs, support their families, and less likely to end up on the street, involved in gangs or prison.

The Mayor's budget sends the message that needy children and working families don't matter. Tell him they do. Tell Mayor Bloomberg and NYC Council Speaker Quinn to restore funding for child care and after-school programs.
Dear Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn,

I am counting on you to save child care and after-school programs for more than 47,000 New York City children.

The families that rely on child care and after-school programs work hard and play by the rules. Both child care and after-school programs provide children with critical educational opportunities that pave the way for future success, and allow working parents to keep their jobs --jobs that support their families and our local economy. Without access to these programs, working parents will be forced to make potentially unsafe arrangements for their children in order to keep their jobs.

I believe it is morally wrong to balance the city budget on the backs of young children and hard-working families. I am counting on you to save child care and after-school. I urge you to restore these devastating cuts and commit to funding high-quality child care and after-school systems that serve greater -- not fewer -- numbers of children.
