Proposition 8: A proposition by the state of California to make same sex marriage illegal. On November 4, 2008 the proposition passed and officially amended the California constitution saying that
only marriage between a man and woman is recognized by the state of California
Why Should We Care?: The California government now has the audacity to think that they can tell all of us who they can and cannot marry. Essentially also telling all of us who we can and cannot love. Usually the California government is fighting back at the opponents of this proposition by saying, "its not like they cannot get a civil union". However, what they don't understand is that it doesn't afford the same rights as a marriage. I believe that we should be able to love and marry who we choose and not be the target of discrimination for doing so. Also, unfortunetley this does not stop in California. Florida and Arizona passed similar amendments and Arkansas has recently passed one prohibiting mainly same sex couples from adopting children. Who are they to say that same sex couples make bad parents? As a child of a gay father, I happen to know they are the same as a heterosexual couple would be.
Here is the scary part, who knows what state is next, it could very well be yours! So sign my petition and I will let the lawmakers know that we are not going to take it sitting down, but we will fight for the right to have the instution of marriage not just between a man and woman, but open to all couples, despite sexual orientation.
To Whom This May Concern,
We the undersigned feel that marriage is defined as a union between two people who love eachother, no matter if the union is heterosexual or homosexual. And also believe that also no matter the union, no couple should be barred from adopting children just because of their sexual orientation. We believe that you should be free to love and not feel shunned by the rest of society. So we impore you, please look at this petition and try to understand just what we are trying to say.
