Recall Caitlin Boehne
Government is supposed to provide a fair and accurate representation of a population, as we have seen through history, when a small radical group receives too much power we see large members of the population marginalized in the interest of a few pet projects, and the true issues and needs of a general population will go unaddressed causing irreparable harm.
Over the past month we have seen the actions of the CAS Student Senator become increasingly radical, and misrepresentative of the CAS Student Body. Culminating most recently with her participation and full support of the Take Back NYU's occupation of the Kimmel Center. These types of actions disrupt student life on campus, and send the wrong message to the administration. Instead of senseless radical stunts, we need to accomplish change through reasoned dialogue.
Students at NYU and CAS do care about issues such as Financial Aid, Tuition Stabilization, and increasing transparency, and want to see change. It becomes much more difficult to address these issues when radical unpopular behavior drives people away, and make effective, sensible, reform more difficult. As we saw in November we can create change through existing institutions with well-spoken and rational representation that seeks to create a broad inclusive coalition of the general population, not a minority view.
The actions of Senator Boehne have harmed the image of New York University's College of Arts and Science. In these difficult and trying economic times the image and reputation of our school matters even more. When an individual who represents a large population engages in unpopular, illegal, and radical behavior the image of the represented are negatively affected. There is too much at stake right now to let this continue.
It is now our time to take back NYU, and see that the issues that truly matter are addressed, and histrionic stunts have no place in our student government.
