MAKE RETAIL CHAINS CLOSE FOR 10 DAYS EACH YEAR!
- da: Richard J. Clifford
- destinatario: The President, the Congress, and the Governors of all 50 states and the District of Columbia
Large retail chains such as Wal-Mart, Target, Albertsons, Macy's and Simon Malls are making people work on holidays such as Easter, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, etc. These holidays are celebratory inasmuch as they commemorate some aspect of the American Experience. This is a continuation of modern day exploitation of workers.
I am therefore petitioning the above mentioned to pass a law that such said retailers close for 10 days during the calendar year and that they pay their employees time and a half as well as cover their health insurance at the rate of 100%.
Therefore, it is petitioned that national retail chains such as those mentioned are to close on the following ten days of the year:
Easter Sunday
Memorial Day
Independence Day*
Labor Day
Patriot Day(September 11th.)
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day*
New Year's Day
Furthermore, it is proposed that these establishments not force their employees to work on these days, and that they cover all expenses incurred thereof. If these retailers open on the days listed, they will not be allowed to open on Sundays for no less than a year.
The following establishments are exempt:
Convenience Stores
Pharmacies
Service Stations
Bars & Restaurants
Flea Markets
Yard Sales
Retailers Serving Ethnic Communities
Amusement Parks & Recreational Facilities
Movie Theaters
Internet Retailers
The following are not exempt:
Liquor Stores**
Adult Entertainment Establishments
This law supercedes all current laws and shall be valid in all 50 States and the District of Columbia. All USA territories and possessions, as well as tourist centers in the USA, shall be exempt.
*If these holidays occur on Saturday, the establishments in question shall also be closed on Sunday. If they occur on Sunday, they will also be closed on Monday.
**Convenience stores that sell beer, wine and spirits are exempt, provided that they limit their selling hours of said products and limit sales to those with proper and valid identification.
