Today's education leaves kids without the ability to perform tasks in a real world workplace. It is my belief, in addition to the education children already receive; such as math, science and geography should include TRADES! Doing so would provide a huge impact on how they will be prepared to work in a real world place.
Let's face it, we all want our children to believe that they all will become presidents, astronauts, movie stars and professional athletes, but the reality is… MANY of them will be doing the brunt of the workforce. Why not provide them with a well rounded education to help them succeed in today's economy, by including hands on trade experiences. To help them exceed in something greater, we can introduce trades such as electrical, masonry, plumbing, carpentry, medical science, programming, or food service management.
I'm not diminishing that there aren't slight likenesses in some schools already, like tech education, nor am I saying that we don't have trade schools available, generally for adults; but why not start this experience early? If children can start experiencing trades at an early age it may help them discover what they actually like to do. Allowing children to try multiple trades for a semester could help them decipher whether it is a good fit for them. Perhaps they will excel or really love doing that particular trade. If a trade is something that is enjoyed then grades, credits and certificates should be provided to further their job skills upon leaving and entering the workforce.
