Dear Students,
By signing this petition, you are showing your support for a recycling program for paper products at Russell Sage College. As a part of our Women Changing the World Project, we have investigated the costs and benefits of recycling on this campus to find some startling facts.
1. We are the only College/University in the Capital District that does not recycle paper products.
2. Just considering this school’s subscription to the New York Times alone, the lack of a recycling program at this school results in 815 newspapers a week being thrown in the garbage. With the average New York Times weighing around 4.2 lbs, that’s about 3,423 lbs of paper waste a week.
3. Most of all, if we recycled, we estimate that our college would SAVE $6,511 a year, which is approximately a quarter (1/4) of our waste removal budget.
Please sign our petition, and help us get the ball rolling in our fight to show this college that recycling on campus is an important issue that the students want the administration to address. If you have any questions or want more information, please do not hesitate to contact members of this Women Changing the World Group or come to our presentation on Tuesday December 12, at 9:50 in the Upton Center.

Dear President Jeanne H. Neff,
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our desire to see a paper recycling program put into place on campus at Russell Sage College. Each year students are called to use an exorbitant amount of paper between subscribing to the New York Times, submitting assignments, printing assignments, and conducting research. The students feel that disposing of this paper in the garbage is an inexcusable amount of waste, and, as women of influence, in order to uphold the last part of our college’s motto “to do,” holding our institution to be more environmentally conscientious and responsible, we ask the campus of Russell Sage College to provide its students with a realistic and accessible alternative to the disposing of paper in the garbage through a paper recycling program for both newsprint and virgin fibers.
Several other colleges in the capital district have recycling programs that save them money on their waste disposal costs, such as Siena College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Hudson Valley Community College. After speaking with representatives from several other colleges, officials from Rensselaer County, Albany County, and attempting to garner correct information from our own institution, we have come to the following conclusions:
1 We are the only College/University in the Capital District that does not recycle paper products.
2 We are the only College/University without a specific position to handle this issue or issues related to recycling and waste removal in its entirety.
3 Just considering this school’s subscription to the New York Times alone, the lack of a recycling program at this school results in 815 newspapers a week being thrown in the garbage. With the average New York Times weighing around 4.2 lbs, that’s about 3,423 lbs of paper waste a week.
4 Most of all, if we recycled, we estimate that this college would SAVE $6,511 a year, which is approximately a quarter (1/4) of our waste removal budget.
As women of influence that are financing our own education at this institution, we would like to see our voices and our thoughts turned into actions. We are women of influence as this college has taught us to be. It is only by first influencing the microcosm of our institution, that we are then able to grow and influence the world.
Please take our proposal and requests into consideration, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
