Support Organic Farms in North Carolina

North Carolina should be supporting local farmers and expanding its commitment to healthy, organic standards. Instead, some state legislators and the NC Department of Agriculture are pushing legislation that would further concentrate corporate control over North Carolina food and farming.

House Bill 379 would remove authority from local governments to prevent sale and cultivation of plants. It could also prevent local governments from enacting notification policies to protect organic farmers from the genetic contamination derived from genetically-modified crops.

Big Ag companies (like Monsanto) have been lobbying for identical legislation across the country since 2004. It’s clear why a bill like this might be good for the likes of big companies that sell genetically modified seeds, but this is a raw deal for local farmers, organic farmers, and local governments.

Tell the state Agriculture department and your state legislators that you oppose H379.
Dear [Legislator],

Please oppose House Bill 379. This proposal could harm small local farmers in North Carolina, especially those finding success meeting the demands of the emerging organic foods markets. H379 is could prevent local decision-makers from protecting farmers from genetically-modified seeds that may contaminate their crops.

Large corporate agriculture companies that sell genetically modified seeds are pushing this legislation across the country.

Please support local farms and farmers and oppose this misguided proposal.

Thank you,
