On Feb. 26, 2009, the New Mexico State Senate failed to advance the Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act to the state House. The vote was a blow for all of us who believe in the values of fairness and inclusion. It's an especially painful disappointment for the couples and families who've made a commitment to each other for life and seek only an equal commitment under the law.
Let our state legislature know that the time has come to recognize and provide legal protections for domestic partnerships by adding your name to the petition.
We believe our country is at its best when we, as Americans, put aside our differences and do what's right for the wellbeing of our people and the building of community.
Currently under New Mexico law, many loving couples in our state cannot make joint legal decisions and share the necessary resources, like health insurance, that guarantee family security and stability. This creates unnecessary hardships in the lives of good people.
Domestic partnership legislation would resolve this dilemma for same-sex couples who are unable to marry, as well as for straight couples - many of whom are senior citizens and people with disabilities - that choose not to marry for financial and other reasons.
