End New Restriction on Women's Rights in Iraq

A new regulation instituted by the women affairs coordinator in Iraq's Ministry of Oil forbids women working in the ministry from wearing dresses, skirts, modern shoes, trousers, and colorful clothes. The new regulation is a violation of women's right to freedom and personal liberty.

The most recent Human Rights Watch report on Iraqi women shows that they continue to be victims of violence, both from family members who commit "honor" crimes against them and from extremists who target women involved in public life. The new regulation supports the radical agenda of the latter by restricting women's dress in public.

Call on the Iraqi Minister of Oil to revoke the new regulation that violates a basic right by restricting women's freedom to choose their own clothing.
We the undersigned call on you to revoke the new regulation that restricts women working in the Ministry of Oil from wearing dresses, skirts, modern shoes, trousers, and colorful clothes. The new rule is a violation of women's rights to freedom and personal liberty and supports the radical agenda of extremists who target women involved in public life. We urge you to end the regulation immediately. Thank you for your consideration on this important matter.
