Release our incarcerated war heroes!

FOR THE LAST NINE YEARS, WE HAVE BEEN AT WAR AGAINST TERRORISM. OUR TROOPS HAVE SACRIFICED THEIR OWN SAFETY AND LIVES FOR OURS. IN SOME CASES, BECAUSE OF THEM DOING THEIR JOB, THEY'VE BEEN PUNISHED AND IMPRISONED. THEY NEED TO BE RELEASED AND TREATED AS THE HEROES THEY ARE. THEY HAVE ALL ALREADY BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH WITHOUT HAVING THEIR OWN COUNTRY TURN AGAINST THEM!
There is a growing and frightening trend of prosecuting and imprisoning our own American soldiers for "war crimes" who are defending our country overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Have many of our loyal soldiers suddenly lost all their morals, or is this something more insidious?

The U.S. military is more than happy to recruit eager, young men as young as 18 (they haven%u2019t even lived yet) with glossy marketing literature, telling them how exciting it will be to fight the enemy, kill terrorists, use big powerful weapons, wow %u2013 ! It signs them up, gives them deadly weapons, trains them to fight and kill, and sends them to FIGHT AND KILL. Then, our military turns on these brave and loyal soldiers, who are doing their best to fight a very determined enemy who don't have "Rules of engagement".

"Rules of engagement (ROE)%u201D as determined by military top brass, have been put in place so we do not engage in unethical warfare and to protect actual civilians. These are necessary, but some of these rules are endangering our troops unnecessarily such as the failed "Catch and Release" policy.

We are fighting a sworn enemy, who plays by no rules, and our rules are being USED AGAINST OUR SOLDIERS, by the enemy.

Where is the political support from our politicians? Are they even aware of this trend, do they agree with it, or do they simply not care? Where are the conservative talk show pundits on this? The silence is deafening.

All of their salaries are paid for by TAXPAYERS, yet they don%u2019t care what taxpayers want or say. Any politician can write a letter on behalf of any soldier for a clemency hearing or other support. There is nothing legally or otherwise stopping them -- except their own unwillingness to stand up for our troops when the chips are down.

Our politicians, on both sides of the aisle, who claim to support our troops with rah-rah language in their automated e-mail responses, in their political posturing, slogans, brochures, etc. are IGNORING our soldiers in their most desperate time of need.

Many of our troops are operating on a few hours of sleep per night for many nights in a row in highly stressful combat zones. Some in active duty have even been diagnosed with PTSD -- are put on antidepressants and sleeping pills -- and sent back to the battlefield to fight! These things are shocking -- and happening right now in our military!

While our country is distracted and entertaining itself on social media like Facebook, watching the news, debating illegal immigration, nominees for justices for the Supreme Court, and other %u201Cissues of the day,%u201D those soldiers who have FOUGHT AND DEFENDED our country are lanquishing in prison, wondering, %u201CWhy am I here? I was trying to do what they wanted....%u201D Many are suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome, are depressed, emotionally numb, angry, frightened -- in prisons like Ft. Leavenworth Kansas. Some of these cases are the result of the failed "Catch and Release" policy where a known enemy who has been caught is let go with simply "a pledge" that he won't' return to harm our soldiers again. Our troops have seen these same enemies return time and time again to hurt or kill our troops and their conscience won't let them go as they are unwilling to take the chance that the enemy will be back to kill them and their comrades.

Why isn't the same kind of leniency afforded to our own troops?

There is a growing grassroots trend to push for a thorough investigation into each of these cases of our imprisoned soldiers due to the belief of judicial mischief, such as in the case of Michael Behenna, not allowing evidence, etc. Carl Bjork should not have ever had charges brought against him in the first place but our prosecutors are quicker to believe the accuser rather than our own troops. We need to put a magnifying glass on these decisions of prosecutors and judges and at the military justice system itself.

Next, we believe an overhaul of military justice is in order. %u201CRules of engagement%u201D must not be %u201CRules of Endangerment%u201D to our troops. Any rule that puts our soldiers at risk for life or limb or puts them in unnecessary harm%u2019s way must be revised.

The legal term %u201Cmurder%u201D is used incorrectly and very loosely in military court. Can a soldier %u201Cmurder%u201D an enemy combatant attempting to kill?

Trying and prosecuting our own soldiers not only affects them %u2013 it affects their families as well, emotionally and financially. These families already have sacrificed their children who volunteer for the military. Then they are further burdened financially when they are forced to use their own limited resources for competent legal defense while the government spends our tax dollars as if it were a credit card with no limit! Many families of soldiers are of the lower income levels. Many in our military are not commonly from powerful and rich families with influence. These families have very limited resources, especially when they are up against the all-powerful U.S. government, who literally has a blank check to use against our own soldiers. Our own miliitary has turned on them.

Who is going to help them? Money is power and this abuse of governmental power is the very definition of tyranny. It is very ironic that they are using this power against those who defend our country and protect our freedoms.

This %u201Ctrend%u201D of trying and imprisoning our own soldiers stems from the belief that if we harshly prosecute them, using them as %u201Csacrificial lambs%u201D the United States will %u201Clook good in the eyes of the world as we're tough on 'war crimes.' This is a misguided and dangerous belief playing into our enemy's hands and shows how dangerous %u2018political correctness%u2019 has truly become.

If this injustice continues, we must demand that ALL OUR MEN COME HOME %u2013 NOW.

FREE OUR POW%u2019S held by the U.S. government -- they are American soldiers-- not common criminals.
